A La Mode

Planting:
- Plant after soil warms to 60°F (usually late May in Zone 6B)
- Dig holes 6-8 inches deep, lay tubers horizontally with eyes facing up
- Space 12-18 inches apart - they need room to breathe and show off
- Don't water until you see green shoots (wet tubers = rotting tubers)

Growing Season:
- Water deeply but less frequently once established - soggy roots are unhappy roots
- Stake tall varieties early - dinner plates get top-heavy when they're doing their thing
- Pinch the first bud for bushier plants and more blooms (hard to do, but worth it!)
- Deadhead spent blooms to keep the flower party going

Feeding:
- Light fertilizer when planting, then monthly during growing season
- Too much nitrogen = gorgeous leaves, fewer flowers (learned this the hard way)
- Bone meal or compost work beautifully

Fall Care:
- Cut stems to 4 inches after first frost blackens the foliage
- Dig tubers carefully - they're more fragile than they look
- Let them dry for a week before storing in slightly damp peat moss

Winter Storage:
- Cool, dark place (35-50°F ideal)
- Check monthly and mist lightly if they're getting too dry
